for naming is not knowing
as every sentence showing
in any descriptive story
pages dilute glory
an epistolary love affair
must fall short of being there
the dancing words and music then
could not hold those moments when
deafening the pilgrim's plight
we rocked so hard by candle light
from Little Wing by Concrete Blonde
to Consolations of David Whyte
(though all verse cannot contain
the boundless chorus and refrain
knowing now not naming how
saxifragilous we remain)
he said
"Most of our heartbreak comes
from attempting to name who or what
we love and the way we love too early
in the vulnerable journey of discovery"
"We name mostly in order to control, but what
is worth loving does not want to be held within
the bounds of too narrow a calling"
alas to this my eyes were shut
if when asking you board the plane
before Bangkok, Bali, Ceningan,
i knew naming is not knowing our
Impossible Hawaii would not be the same
yet the many-moons sky, the long-time sun agree
all free and dancing timelessly
so lucky in love to come back home
to ourselves and we
'tis with words we come to see
what matters ever more will be
ever true as carved in wood
growing sure as trees
unspoken in the forest
unfallen amongst the pines
the times we had were gorgeous
beyond any words of mine
eating, praying, loving
another writer wrote:
"Listen. Balance, my darling,
is not letting anybody love you
less than you love yourself."
falling like a redwood
finally i took note
we call to each all
in love with sounds
of every way which
has no bounds
we name a noun,
a verb, a time
and give it reason,
give it rhyme
saying is not knowing
as a rose by any other name
doesn't matter what we call it
the song remains the same
ooh la la
i wish that
i knew what i know now when I was younger
i wish that i knew what i know now
when I was stronger
